- Assistant Maintenance and Operations Superintendent

Job Summary
This role supports the maintenance, operations, and environmental compliance of a municipal solid waste facility. The position is responsible for planning, coordinating, and performing maintenance and repair of facility infrastructure, grounds, and environmental control systems, while supervising and directing assigned operational staff. The Assistant Maintenance & Operations Superintendent also supports project coordination, procurement, safety programs, and may serve as the acting facility manager when needed.
The position combines hands-on technical work with leadership, regulatory compliance, and operational oversight in a safety-sensitive, essential services environment.
Key Responsibilities
Facility and Equipment Management
Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair environmental control systems, including storm water management, groundwater monitoring, leachate collection and pumping, landfill gas control, and SCADA systems
Maintain and repair facility infrastructure such as buildings, service areas, vehicle scales, utilities, roads, and fencing
Safely operate hand and power tools and small equipment
Assist in planning and scheduling preventive and corrective maintenance
Review specifications and support procurement activities
Coordinate and oversee contractor construction and maintenance projects
Employee Supervision and Leadership
Supervise facility, grounds maintenance, and roadside operations staff
Participate in hiring, training, performance evaluation, and mentoring of employees
Establish priorities, develop work schedules, assign tasks, and monitor progress
Promote teamwork, operational efficiency, and a strong safety culture
Environmental Compliance and Recordkeeping
Prepare and maintain operational and regulatory documentation and reports
Use work order management systems to assign, track, and report maintenance activities
Utilize standard office software applications for documentation and reporting
Customer Service
Interact regularly with staff, vendors, businesses, and the public
Address inquiries and resolve issues professionally and tactfully
Process Improvement
Analyze operational data to improve efficiency, safety, and regulatory compliance
Implement continuous improvement initiatives to optimize facility operations
Requirements
Minimum Education, Training, and Experience
High school diploma or GED
Five (5) years of recent, progressive, full-time experience performing and overseeing facilities and grounds maintenance
Demonstrated experience supervising employees in an operational environment
Preferred Qualifications
Experience constructing, operating, or maintaining landfill environmental control systems
Experience maintaining and repairing complex facility infrastructure, including mechanical and electrical systems
Supervisory experience directing and evaluating large operational teams
Customer service experience working directly with the public
Experience using work order management software
Proficiency with computers and standard office software applications
Special Requirements
Ability to obtain and maintain a required waste management facility operator license within a defined timeframe
Valid driver’s license and ability to operate a work vehicle
Designation as an essential employee, requiring availability for emergency response, inclement weather, holidays, and weekends
Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE)
Ability to perform very heavy physical work in indoor and outdoor environments, including exposure to environmental hazards
Successful completion of a pre-employment physical examination
