Job Description:
Inova Schar Cancer Institute is looking for a dedicated Breast Medical Oncology Specialty Advanced Practice Provider (APP), Nurse Practitioner and/or Physician Assistant to join the team. This role will be full-time day shift from Full-time: Monday - Friday with rotating weekend call. Sign-on bonus and relocation assistance eligible.

The Breast Medical Oncology Advanced Practice Provider (APP), under general supervision and in accordance with established APP protocols, performs comprehensive physical examinations and manages common complications in medical oncology patients. This role involves counseling and educating patients and their families, monitoring progress from diagnosis through long-term follow-up, and providing close management for those undergoing active treatment. The APP is responsible for the ongoing clinical management of patients during their visits, working collaboratively with referring providers and the broader care team to ensure an optimal patient experience and the best possible outcomes.
Responsibilities include:
- Ensure patient information, visit history, refer outs, lab follow-up, phone calls, and consults are carefully and completely documented in the electronic medical record.
- Conducts in-depth interviews with patients and/or family, constructs comprehensive medical histories, performs initial and periodic physical examinations, and explores patient's interpretation of health needs. Identifies and treats patients' diseases.
- Directly performs or orders appropriate diagnostic studies and interprets finished results.
- Instructs and counsels patients and families regarding preventive care, medical problems, psychological problems, and use of prescribed treatments and drugs.
- Writes orders to increase, decrease or change medication
- Identifies and records pertinent progress of patients, updating and summarizing charts, changing orders when appropriate and notifying the responsible physician of changes in the patient's condition.
- Educates/coaches fellow staff members including RNs and medical assistants
Minimum qualifications:
- Education: Master's in advanced clinical Practice or graduate of a post masters certificate program for nurse practitioners, American Association of Colleges of Nursing of the National League for Nursing. For physician Assistants, graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program and certification by National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
- Experience: 2 years Advanced Practice Oncology experience preferred but not required
- Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) upon start
- Licensure: Licensed Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner; If Nurse Practitioner: RN Compact License(depending on State of primary residence) AND a license (or eligibility for) as a nurse practitioner or physician assistant in the Commonwealth of Virginia AND a "Practice Agreement" signed by sponsoring/ supervising physician(s), AND a written "Scope of Practice/Protocol" signed by the supervising physician, AND "Drug Enforcement Administration License" (if prescribing controlled substances)
- Payer Credentialing: Ability to successfully complete the credentialing process by third-party payors and Ability to enrolled as a CMS Medicare/Medicaid payor
- Medical Staff Credentialing: Successful completion of credentialing for Medical Staff membership and appropriate clinical privileges sufficient to perform all required services
