Role Description
This is a full-time on-site role located in Tampa, FL for a Chief of School Security and Emergency Management. Under the direction of the deputy superintendent, operations, the Chief of School Security and Emergency Management will manage the operations, logistics, and personnel of the School Security and Emergency Management Department and serve as the liaison to the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) for any emergency-related situations. The Chief of School Security and Emergency Management will report directly to the Superintendent all emergency-related incidents, direct logistical support, and confer with the superintendent’s staff on such matters. As of July 1, 2018, and upon Senate Bill 7026 becoming law, this position is designated as the district School Safety Specialist.
- Manages the operation and personnel of the district’s security department, including the
- District’s Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan (CEMP).
- Prepares budgets for operation and administration of the security department. Develops and monitors safety training programs for departments and sites.
- Coordinates safety and security procedures with applicable law enforcement and other
- emergency responder agencies.
- Oversees the security of school facilities and sites as well as the completion of the sites’ Crisis Management Plans (CMPs).
- Directs and supervises security department personnel.
- Formulates, recommends, and implements policies and procedures conducive to improved safety and security. Reviews policies and procedures continuously in order to make recommendations to improve upon and standardize the processes. Inspects and analyzes operations regularly within the area of assignment to take action to improve continuously services and support to schools and work locations.
- Conducts training of employees in the procedures and techniques required in the department.
- Assists staff by providing technical guidance and direction.
- Establishes cooperative relationships with district departments, employees, and suppliers, effectively communicating and interpreting policies and procedures as necessary.
- Identifies and resolves department issues, with reference to higher authority as may be required for corrective action.
- Assists in the preparation and issuance of various internal monthly and annual reports that accurately represent the department’s activities.
- Represents the department at meetings with other school district departments, suppliers, and public agencies pertaining to the department.
- Evaluates staff in accordance with the district’s Human Resources Management and
- Development (HRMD) plan.
- Participates in superintendent’s staff meetings to assist in formulation, implementation, and evaluation of appropriate policies and procedures concerning the school system.
- Generates creative solutions to district challenges.
- Prepares recommendations for school board meeting agendas and attends school board
- meetings.
- Leads and monitors division/department in progress toward attainment of divisional strategic goals and objectives.
- Interprets and applies local, state, and/or federal legislation, requirements, and standards to district programs and services.
- Represents the superintendent at school, business, and community meetings. Attends local, regional, and state meetings as a representative of the superintendent.
- Performs any other duties as assigned.

Compensation and Benefits:

Requirements
Qualifications:
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to perform this job successfully.
Education: A master's degree. Degree or formal training in criminology or related field preferred.
Experience: Ten (10) years of increasingly responsible experience in law enforcement or related field, with six (6) years of related management or supervisory experience preferred. Experience in public school administration, public school district administration, or other large diverse organizations preferred. Verified law enforcement experience may substitute for the Master’s education requirement on a basis of two (2) years of experience for each year of the educational requirement.
Certificates/Licenses/Registrations: Law Enforcement Commission or State of Florida D and G licenses.
Language Skills: Read and interpret general business and professional journals, technical procedures, or regulations. Write reports, correspondence, and manuals. Effectively present and respond to questions from managers and the public.
Mathematical Skills: Work with math concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of geometry and trigonometry. Apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Reasoning Ability: Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Computer Skills: Microsoft Office
