GENERAL SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Director of Collections & Exhibitions, the Chief Preparator is a critical member of the collaborative staff charged with producing the museum’s ambitious exhibition program, gallery installations and permanent collection rotations at a high level within the allotted budget, space, and time.
Responsible for the direct supervision of full-time technicians, temporary technicians, and other contractors, working on exhibition and installation projects to include graphics, display, lighting, painting, art handling, framing, art preparation, technology and AV equipment, security and program set up. Hires, trains, and coordinates preparation staff schedules.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES – ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Partners with Chief Exhibition Designer and Chief Registrar to plan for and execute the layout, schedule, protocol and special needs, specialized equipment or construction associated with the movement, installation, and display of various kinds of 2D, and 3D works of art. Knowledge of and ability to read design and construction drawings.
- Collaborates with and advises Chief Exhibition Designer and Chief Registrar on all technical aspects regarding display guidelines, security needs, gallery preparation, construction/deconstruction, casework, platforms, fabrication and mount solutions.
- Design and build casework, platforms and specialty mounts based on design drawings from the Exhibition design department, either in house by staff or by contractor.
- Manages the gallery construction for changing exhibition spaces. Interprets the design plan and executes the removal or addition of temporary gallery walls; moving or fabrication of new casework and platforms; repair and painting of existing walls or casework, either by staff or contractors.
- Oversees the use, maintenance, and safety of the woodshops and equipment at both Mint locations. This includes but is not limited to personal lifts, material moving equipment, stationery power tools, and handheld saws and tools.
- Manages departmental budget; implements control-measures such as energy conservation, evaluation of project work bids, etc. Directs purchases of supplies, materials and services required to implement exhibition and maintain galleries and workshops. Initiates and maintains vendor contacts to ensure competitive pricing.
- Follows departmental budget tracking and reconciliation process.
- Oversees gallery checks and maintenance of galleries and exhibitions to include lighting, mechanical and technical aspects (power, AV, etc.), cleaning of vitrines, floors, and platforms.
- Ensures the safe installation, de-installation, storage, packing and unpacking, and receipt / release of works of art in the collection or on loan to the Museum.
- Responsible for the inventory, organization, and safe storage of exhibition casework, platforms, vitrines, lighting equipment, and A/V equipment in their storage spaces.
- Expert knowledge of best practices for art object handling and movement, installation, packing and crating. Establish best practice guidelines for the preparation staff for the safe movement and installation of art. Provide training and one-on-one instruction as needed.
- Must be able to analyze and problem solve challenges in advance and on the spot.
- Responsible for the safe and secure delivery/pick up of works of art from: offsite locations, farmers, conservators, private collectors, artist studios, and transit between two Mint locations.
- Supports institutional goals by setting departmental goals and priorities, ensuring the efficient execution of the tasks and projects outlined in the priorities.
- Develops, coordinates, communicates, and implements related department projects.
- Plays key role in fostering an organizational culture that values positive leadership, innovation and inclusion and inspires excellence in the work environment.
- Creates monthly, quarterly, or annual reports.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR CONSIDERATION:
EDUCATION: BA in Art, Art History, Museum Studies or related fields required; MFA preferred.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE: Minimum of 5 years professional experience installation, preparation, fine art handling, including managing schedules and contractors; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, supervisory and teamwork skills.
- Ability to assess priorities and work well under pressure, excellent time management, problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Ability to set goals, delegate assignments, follow projects through to completion, handle multiple projects concurrently, and use sound judgment.
- Ability to assess and create display needs in the form of pedestals, cases, shadowboxes, mount fabrication as well as matting and framing needs.
- Experience in crate building and specialized fine art packing; knowledge of current industry trends and museum quality materials.
- Experience with the use of power tools and workshop tools such as J-bars, pallet jacks, fork and scissor lifts.
- Strong computer skills with Microsoft® software applications (Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint), working knowledge of MAC based programs and software.
- Knowledge of The Mint Museum’s collections, goals, values, and mission.
- Must maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.
- Ability to drive a van and box truck.
- Current with OSHA standards and guidelines.
