 - Deputy Community Development Director - Building Safety
 
Description
This position serves as the City’s Building Official and oversees all operations of the Building Safety Division including inspections, permits, and plan review within the Community Development Department; serves as a technical expert and trains, evaluates, and motivates personnel including managers and supervisors; and collaborates with city staff, business owners, developers, outside consultants, and residents to promote compliance with city regulations.
Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
- Serves as the City of Tempe’s Building Official; oversees the activities of the Building Safety Division; advises, consults, and provides information regarding the compliance and enforcement of development; reviews and updates administrative practices, procedures, and policies; assists management with developing recommendations on financial and budget planning.
 - Supervises personnel including assigning and reviewing work, providing guidance, conducting performance evaluations; counselling employees; and implementing discipline procedures when necessary.
 - Advises, consults, and provides information to the City Council, City Manager's Office, City Attorney's Office and Community Development Director regarding building safety, complex development and zoning proposals, and related areas.
 - Participates on a variety of boards, commissions, planning committees, and professional groups; provides technical expertise and recommendations; presents information and recommendations on projects, programs, and documents.
 - Communicates with regional, state, and federal government agencies and stays current on statutes, legislation, case law and other issues that influence enforcement, development, and redevelopment.
 - Analyzes, develops, and presents recommendations related to complex development and zoning proposals along with planning, design, and building inspection issues
 
May perform responsibilities of a similar nature and level as assigned.
Pay Grade: 121
Annual Salary Range:
$138,000 - $203,500

Requirements
Experience:
Five (5) years of experience in architecture, engineering, building safety, construction or related experience that includes at least 3 years of supervisory responsibility.
Candidates must have the minimum amount of work experience. Years of experience are based upon a full-time work schedule (2,080 hours per year). The sum of an applicant’s full-time and/or part-time qualifying work experience must meet or exceed the stated minimum qualification. Education will not substitute for the required work experience; however, related unpaid and/or volunteer work experience may be used as qualifying work experience.
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, architecture, construction, business administration, finance or related field.
Professional Licensure and/or Certifications:
- Possession of, or required to obtain, within six months of hire or promotion, a certification as a Building Official by the International Code Council (ICC).
- Requires a valid driver’s license
