Description
The Director of Programs & Operations is a key member of ASA’s leadership team, reporting directly to the President/CEO.
This position provides strategic and operational leadership for ASA’s safety-related programs and services, including but
not limited to the North Slope Training Cooperative (NSTC), NSTC Operators Group, ASA Online system, and the ABC/ASA
annual safety expo events. ASA plays a vital role in supporting organizations statewide by delivering high-quality, accessible health and safety training
and helping employers streamline training compliance management.
The Director ensures effective program execution, overseeing multiple concurrent projects to completion, while fostering
industry and nonprofit partnerships. As part of the three-person leadership team, the Director contributes to organizational
strategy, represents ASA externally, and actively engages in business and leadership development as well as succession
planning efforts.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Oversee ASA’s safety-related programs, including NSTC, NSTC Operators Group, and the Alaska Safety
Expo, ensuring goals, deliverables, and budgets are met.
Maintain strong relationships with industry partners, member companies, and nonprofit collaborators to
ensure program relevance and impact.
Guide and oversee the development of courses and training programs to meet industry needs.
Lead, mentor, and supervise staff, ensuring effective team operations and supporting professional growth.
Track and manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring execution within scope, timeline, and budget, whether carried out directly or through staff.
Balance day-to-day program management with strategic leadership responsibilities, occasionally stepping in on program execution when needed, with a strong emphasis on follow-through and accountability.
Represent ASA at meetings, conferences, and public events, providing leadership presence and credibility.
Collaborate with the leadership team and Board of Directors on strategic planning, budgeting, and organizational priorities.
Contribute to organizational succession planning by developing staff capacity and ensuring continuity of leadership and programs.
Ensure compliance with ASA policies and procedures; recommend improvements to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
Support grant writing, reporting, and development of proposals or initiatives that align with ASA’s mission.
Serve as a credible safety leader with recognized credentials and the ability to engage ASA’s Board and membership on safety matters.
Requirements
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position manages, directs, and mentors a small team of direct reports. The Director is responsible and accountable for driving specific goals and initiatives of the team, participating in strategic planning, budgeting, personnel management, and reporting. As a member of the leadership team, the Director is accountable for collaborative success with other leaders.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Strong understanding of nonprofit operations, finance, and organizational culture.
Proven experience working with boards of directors, industry leaders, and diverse stakeholders.
Exceptional writing, editing, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
Strong negotiating, networking, and relationship-building abilities.
Knowledge of safety standards and practices; professional certifications (CSP, CIH, CHST, OHST or similar) strongly preferred.
Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite and QuickBooks or similar accounting systems.
Ability to lead and manage change, adapt to evolving priorities, and balance strategic and operational work.
Proficiency in project management principles and tools; proven ability to manage complex projects from planning to execution.
Ability to successfully delegate, monitor, supervise, and support team members.
Fair, honest, and adaptable leader who can collaborate effectively while also making decisive choices.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in business management, safety management, or a related field preferred (equivalent experience considered).
At least six years of progressive leadership and management experience, including a minimum of three years with primary responsibilities focused on safety.
Nonprofit management experience preferred.
Safety-related professional certifications (CSP, CIH, CHST, OHST or similar) strongly preferred.
Prior experience in Alaska with oil and gas, construction, mining, or related industry is preferred.
Valid state driver’s license and ability to travel locally and occasionally out of state.

Physical Requirements:
