The Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites applications for a full-time Teaching Professor position with partial teaching responsibilities in the Legal Studies Program. The rank is open to Assistant, Associate, or Full Teaching Professor. The start date is August 15, 2026. This is a non-tenure track position. The position has an initial appointment of three years with the possibility of continued reappointments depending upon performance. There are five required qualifications: (1) a J.D. or a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice or a related discipline at the time of appointment, (2) experience or interest/training in teaching courses specifically related to UNC Charlotte’s Legal Studies minor (e.g., possible courses include court systems, criminal procedure, evidence, and/or criminal justice and the law, etc.,), (3) experience or interest/training in teaching introductory and upper-level undergraduate courses in general areas across the discipline of Criminal Justice & Criminology, (4) experience or interest/training in teaching online, and (5) evidence of, or the potential for, excellence in teaching. The workload of a teaching professor primarily involves teaching (typically four courses per semester, some of which may be online), but also includes some service to the department, college, university, and/or community. Prior teaching experience is preferred. Prior teaching experience is preferred.
The Department. The Department consists of fourteen tenure-track faculty members and three full-time lecturers and/or teaching professors. The B.A. (approximately 670 majors and 125 minors) and M.S. (approximately 25 graduate students) degrees are offered in Criminal Justice & Criminology, and the Department contributes to the undergraduate minor in Legal Studies, the Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program in Public Policy, and to the School of Data Science.
The College and University. As the largest and most academically diverse college at UNC Charlotte, the College of Humanities & Earth and Social Sciences houses 15 departments, 13 interdisciplinary programs, and 7 applied centers. Finalists who are invited for interviews will be asked to discuss how their teaching practices engage, include, and eliminate barriers to learning for UNC Charlotte students, and how their educational approach helps increase the engagement and success of all students regardless of their entry pathway into the university. The candidate selected for this position will be required to submit their official transcripts of their highest degree upon hire.
