Description
The Heavy Equipment Mechanic position is responsible for performing mechanical maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs to a fleet of vehicles and heavy equipment, including diesel, alternative fuel, and hybrid systems. Take part in a national award-winning fleet and work within a state of the art workshop and garage.
What You'll Do
- Perform inspections, preventative maintenance, and repairs on light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment, including alternative fuel and hybrid systems, mowers, tractors, graders, plow trucks, and more.
- Diagnose and identify problems reported by drivers, utilizing specialized shop tools, equipment, and service information.
- Refurbish and overhaul vehicles and equipment, including performing welding tasks and fabricating parts.
- Install or remove specialized equipment, such as radios, lights, police squad equipment, and trailer plugs.
- Respond to emergency roadside service calls to perform field repairs or transport vehicles/equipment back to the shop when necessary.
- Keep a record of vehicle maintenance and perform road tests.
- Maintain shop tools, equipment, and working areas in a safe, clean, and orderly fashion.
- Foster a work environment that promotes safe work habits, become familiar with work procedures and policies, and observe and follow all safety best practices.
- Maintain a supportive work environment and demonstrate a desire to exceed the expectations of internal and external customers.
- Perform other duties as required.
Schedule, Pay & Benefits
- Monday-Friday, 6:30 am - 2:30 pm.
- Starting Pay: $30.22 - $34.03 per hour.

Work Setting
- Based out of the District's Fleet Management office and workshop in West Chicago, IL.
- Primarily working indoors in a repair shop setting and partially outdoors across various forest preserve sites throughout DuPage County.

Requirements
- Must be 18 years of age or older at the time of hire.
- Skilled Trades & Technical Training in vehicle and heavy diesel equipment repair; 4 - 6 years of related experience; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Valid Driver's License in good standing.
- Illinois Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with airbrakes endorsement in good standing preferred or within 6 months of employment.
- Must provide basic mechanical tools and toolbox
- Ability to obtain 3 ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) or equivalent automotive certifications, including master truck, within 1 year of employment.
- Alternative Fuel Repair Certification required within 6 months of employment.
- International Fluid Power Certification required within 6 months of employment.
- Experience with arc and MIG welding.
- Deep expertise in preventative maintenance techniques for vehicles and equipment.
- Thorough understanding of standard repair and maintenance procedures for gas and diesel engines and chassis units.
- Well-versed in drivetrains, brake systems, heating/cooling systems, and electrical systems for various equipment.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards, necessary safety precautions proper safety protocols, and the use of PPE and OSHA regulations.
- Effective at diagnosing and repairing a wide variety of vehicles and heavy equipment.
- Skilled in using and maintaining tools and equipment for vehicle servicing.
- Skilled at operating electronic diagnostic equipment effectively.
- Ability to utilize software programs; workorder systems, Outlook, etc.
- May require employee to successfully pass fit testing to ensure mask properly seals per OSHA standards.
- Competent in following verbal and written instructions accurately.
- Demonstrated success in establishing and maintaining productive working relationships.
- Strong communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
- Strong organizational skills to maintain accurate records and data.
