Description
MnDOT is hiring multiple Highway Maintenance Workers/Snow & Ice (Transportation Generalist) positions to support roadway safety and infrastructure in the Twin Cities Metro area. These positions are essential to maintaining and reconstructing roadways and roadsides, ensuring safe travel for the public year-round.
Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Roadway Maintenance:
Patching pavement; Snow and ice control; Guardrail and fence repair; Landscaping and vegetation control; Shoulder and slope repair.
Equipment Operation & Maintenance: Operate heavy equipment (e.g., snowplows, loaders, trucks); Conduct daily pre- and post-trip inspections; Identify and report vehicle issues; Perform minor equipment repairs.
Traffic Control & Safety: Set up and maintain traffic control zones; Ensure safety compliance during maintenance operations.

Position Title/Experience: CDL Class A Truck Driver (or CDL Class B Driver, or Heavy Equipment Operator, etc.) and/or one year of experience performing activities in any of the following: snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities (roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, landscaping, operating heavy equipment, or farm experience). If you have experience operating snowplow equipment, please specify the type of equipment you’ve used: Class 33, Class 35 or pickup truck with a plow.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
Commercial Driver’s License (CDL): Possession of a valid Class A or Class B CDL with no air brake restriction and a tanker endorsement is required. (This must be clearly listed on your resume.)
AND
One (1) year of experience in any of the following:
Snow and ice operations
Soils or road surface maintenance
Roadside or bridge maintenance
Sign installation/maintenance
Related work (e.g., commercial driving, landscaping, heavy equipment operation, or farm work) OR
Completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (minimum 60 semester or 90 quarter credits) may substitute for one year of experience
AND
Working knowledge of English is required to effectively read, write, speak, and comprehend both oral and written information. This includes the ability to communicate with coworkers and the general public in person, over two-way radios, and through other electronic devices, as well as to maintain routine written logs and basic records.
Please note: Veterans may be eligible for a waiver of CDL based on military experience with a VMET DD2586. Please contact your County Veteran Service Officer (Find a CVSO) to obtain a copy of your VMET DD2586.
Successful candidates for both the Transportation Generalist and Transportation Associate positions will be required to pass a computerized ACT math and reading test as part of the hiring contingencies. The required passing score for the math portion is a level 3 or higher and the reading portion is a level 4 or higher.
