GENERAL SUMMARY
Ready to make a difference while keeping the fun going at Oakland County water parks? Under limited supervision, you will help maintain a safe swimming environment using established techniques taught during initial and weekly in-service training. You will supervise water activities, enforce safety rules, respond to emergencies, and assist with general maintenance and cleaning.

Minimum Qualifications
Supervises and monitors the daily swimming and water activities.
Enforces safety rules.
Maintains and ensures a safe swimming environment for all Oakland County Parks patrons using established techniques.
Interacts with patrons by answering questions and addressing patrons concerns.
Actively participate in up to 4 hours of in-service training per month in order to maintain valid lifeguard license requirements.
Provides general Customer Service by interacting with patrons in a courteous manner, answers inquiries regarding directions, operations, and emergency procedures.
Handles emergency situations that may arise during open operations, including providing first aid as necessary and communicating effectively and verbally with emergency personnel. Situations may include water emergencies, emergencies created by violation of safety rules, emergencies involving missing persons, and lifesaving activities.
Coordinate with emergency services, such as 911 and EMS/Fire personnel effectively and verbally. Also be able to effectively use provided warning services to control and assist patrons in emergency situations.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists with the general maintenance of the water park equipment.
May teach swim lessons to individuals of all ages.
May be assigned to general cleaning duties which includes, but is not limited to; picking up loose litter, mopping floors, cleaning bathrooms and maintaining a 30 minute bathroom check, pulling trash bags, weeding, and sweeping.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL & MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to communicate, and perform the Lifeguard duties listed below:
Ability to complete 200 yard swim using crawl or breaststroke without resting.
Feet first surface dive and retrieval of a 10 pound brick from a minimum depth of 8 feet.
Treading water for 2 minutes without using arms (hands above water).
Exit pool without use of ladder, steps or zero depth exit.
Vision standard: 20/25 corrected or uncorrected vision and have near acuity, depth perception, ability to distinguish details closely and at a distance.
Ability to listen, understand and distinguish sounds and speech and respond accordingly in the English language.
Lifeguards must be able to perform rescue skills in the working environment and must be able to demonstrate the ability to work efficiently within the parameters of an established Emergency Action Plan. Lifeguards must be able to exit from a pool at any point without the use of ladders, steps or a zero-depth exit.
Participating in the ILTP requires that lifeguard candidates be in good physical condition. Limitations that may present a health or safety hazard while participating in training should be communicated to the facility/instructor.
Ability to demonstrate proficiency and ability to communicate effectively and verbally in the English language. Proficiency in other languages will be considered helpful in addition to the English language.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed outside with exposure to weather elements.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The primary purpose of this job description is to set a fair and equitable salary range for this job classification. Requirements
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
A. REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must be at least 16 years old for waterparks and 18 years old for beaches and pass the four-day mandatory unpaid International Lifeguard Training Program that includes passing a three-part exam: physical condition, written and a hands-on practical.
NOTE: The parks’ pre-employment swim test and the International Lifeguard Training Program are provided free by the Oakland County Parks. Training consists of two weekends, generally in April or May. Applicants must attend all four days and pass a written and practical test to complete training. Successful completion of training does not guarantee employment with Oakland County Parks and Recreation.
Must be proficient in and able to communicate effectively and verbally in the English language.
Pass the employment physical established for this classification.
Testing Requirements:
To test-out at the end of class a candidate must:
Meet the prerequisite and physical requirements outlined above
Attend all classes for session signed up for
Complete a workbook that is provided on the first day of class. Candidates have one week to complete the basic workbook that follows along with the book. A copy of the book is provided to the candidates to use during their training. Only candidates that pass the class and are hired by OCPR or pay for their certification are issued a textbook to keep.
Practical test-out: Must complete practical tests on CPR, First Aid, Spinals, Rapids and Saves.
Written test-out: Pass ILTP written examination with 80% or better
B. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
If assigned to a youth recreational program, prior to employment, candidates will be required to provide Parks & Recreation with documentation from the Michigan Department of Human Services (previously called Family Independence Agency) that they have not been named in a central registry case as the perpetrator of child abuse or child neglect. In addition, applicants being considered for hire will be asked to sign a form authorizing Parks & Recreation to request and receive a criminal history check in accordance with the privacy act of 1974.
Applicants for positions at Parks & Recreation will not be considered if they have been convicted of either of the following:
