Description
Position Summary
Perform custodial, construction, maintenance and repair activities that ensure sustainment of approximately 1500 acres of park land and recreation areas and the Oakland Township portion of the Paint Creek Trail.
Responsibilities
Perform maintenance, improvements and safety inspections of park structures, buildings, grounds and recreation facilities (e.g. play structures, trails, boardwalks, athletic fields, etc.)
Operate and maintain park vehicles and equipment including trucks, tractors, mowers, and irrigation systems.
Inspect parks and facilities regularly to ensure safety, security, and cleanliness.
Maintain athletic fields including aeration, irrigation, mowing, seeding, and field lining.
Constructs, maintains/repairs park structures and grounds including nature center, play structures, outbuildings, picnic pavilions, storage buildings, restrooms, fencing, stairs, signs, parking lots, landscaping, trails, boardwalks and recreation facilities.
Applies herbicides as necessary to areas including archery range, parking lots, and trails.
Perform maintenance, gravel replacement, grading and repairs of parking lots/trails.
Perform trash removal, tree pruning, snow plowing, and general upkeep of park land and recreation areas.
Responds appropriately to emergencies on park property and recreation facilities.
Safely operates and maintains hand and power tools including powered equipment.
Maintains safety and repair records and reports.
Remove/prune smaller fallen and/or hazardous trees with a chainsaw.
Participates in special events and park programs.
Maintains good relations with the general public and law enforcement officers.
Provide accurate information about parks and programs to the public.
Attend meetings, training, and seminars related to job duties.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Required Education & Experience
High school diploma or GED.
Two years of experience in parks, facilities, or grounds maintenance or equivalent preferred.
Knowledge & Skills
Ability to read and interpret maps, plans, and technical documents.
Considerable knowledge of methods, techniques, and requirements for the operation and maintenance of buildings, facilities, grounds, and equipment used in park and recreation systems.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Certifications & Licenses
Valid Michigan driver's license with good driving record with the ability to provide own transportation as needed.
Ability to obtain and maintain relevant certifications (e.g., First Aid/CPR, Commercial Pesticide Applicator License) within six months of employment.
Physical Requirements:
Duties require sufficient mobility to work in a normal park and recreation setting and to safely operate a motor vehicle, such as a truck or tractor, and use of standard equipment including chain saw, wood chipper, trimmers and saws; and hearing and speech sufficient to communicate in person or over the telephone. The incumbent will work primarily outdoors and be seasonally exposed to extreme (both hot and cold) weather conditions. The incumbent must be physically capable of completing the tasks outlined about with sufficient physical ability to lift fifty (50) pounds, climb ladders, walk for extended periods, stand for long periods, and traverse rough terrain. Must be able to perform the essential functions of this position with or without reasonable accommodation.
