Description
The MIS Bariatric/Foregut Surgery Fellowship at Atrium Health is a one-year, high-volume clinical program offering advanced training in laparoscopic and bariatric, metabolic, and foregut surgery. The fellow will participate in operative care, perioperative management, endoscopy, multidisciplinary conferences, and research. Graduates are prepared for independent practice in both academic and high-volume community settings.
Requirements
Citizenship & Visa Eligibility
- U.S. Citizens and U.S. Permanent Residents (Green Card holders)
Medical School Eligibility
- Graduates of U.S. or Canadian medical schools
- International medical graduates who are ECFMG certified
Training & Certification Requirements
- Completion of an ACGME-accredited General Surgery Residency (or Canadian equivalent) by June 30, 2026
- American Board of Surgery board-eligible or board-certified (or Canadian equivalent)
- Successful completion of USMLE or COMLEX Step 1, Step 2, and Step 3 (or MCCEE for Canadian-equivalent pathways)
- Candidates with an approved General Surgery specialty certificate from a recognized board outside the U.S. or Canada may be considered per Fellowship Council standards
Licensure Requirements
Applicants must:
- Qualify for a full, unrestricted North Carolina medical license
- Obtain a DEA license
- Meet all Atrium Health/Advocate Health onboarding and credentialing requirements
Additional Program Expectations
- Demonstrated interest in minimally invasive, bariatric, and foregut surgery
- Strong operative foundation and commitment to developing advanced laparoscopic, robotic, and endoscopic skills
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary, academic surgical practice
- Participation in research, QI projects, and clinical education activities
