The Department of Biomedical Sciences at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, https://www.ohio.edu/medicine/, (HCOM) invites applications for an open rank tenure-track faculty position in Virology.
Position Overview
We seek a virologist who will establish a successful research program at Ohio University. The candidate’s expertise should complement existing strengths in infectious disease biology. The candidate is expected to be an active member within the Infectious and Tropical Disease Institute (ITDI), an Institute with foci on microbial pathogenesis, tropical disease, and sexual and reproductive health.
Responsibilities
- Maintain an active, externally funded research program in virology.
- Teach virology and related topics to medical students.
- Mentor postdoctoral fellows and graduate students.
- Contribute to institutional service and interdisciplinary collaborations across Biomedical Sciences Department, https://www.ohio.edu/medicine/about/departments/biomedical, ITDI, HCOM and Ohio University.
- Contribute to scientific and strategic growth of the ITDI.
Research Environment
The successful candidate will join a collaborative and expanding community of infectious disease researchers, with modern laboratory space up to Biosafety Level II labs and animal facilities. HCOM’s Infectious and Tropical Disease Institute provides a dynamic platform for translational research, global health partnerships, and interdisciplinary training initiatives that bridge medicine, public health, and molecular science.
Appointment and Resources
- 11-month, tenure-track appointment in the Department of Biomedical Sciences, Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine.
- Final workload distribution is negotiable but will approximate 60% Research, 20% Teaching, and 20% Service.
- Flexible start date.
- Competitive start-up package and access to shared core facilities. Institutional support will be provided jointly by the Office of Research and Grants (ORG), ITDI, Vice President for Research (VPR), and the Department of Biomedical Sciences. Laboratory space is available on the Athens campus.

- Salary will be commensurate with education and experience, while also considering internal equity.

Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
- Ph.D., D.V.M, M.D., D.O., or equivalent degree in virology, microbiology or a closely related field.
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated record of sustained, competitive external funding.
- Evidence of effective leadership and mentorship in academic or research settings.
- Commitment to excellence in teaching and service.
- Research focused on virus-host interactions, emerging viral diseases, or microbial pathogenesis.
- Experience building interdisciplinary or cross-institutional research programs.
- Potential to assume a leadership role within ITDI.
