- Water Reclamation Operations and Maintenance Engineering Co-op
Description
Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (District) is seeking two students to assist the Office of Contract Compliance (OCC) with preparation of specifications and contract documents for repair and replacement projects and with various studies related to wastewater and biosolids processing.
The co-ops will gain:
- An understanding of construction specification and contract language.
- experience working with operators, vendors, contractors, and engineers to prepare construction specifications and contracts.
- an increased understanding of various unit processes at water reclamation facilities (WRF).
- hands-on experience in data analysis of water reclamation processes.
- experience planning, scheduling, and managing tasks of assigned projects.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The co-ops will learn how to research and develop construction specifications then advertise and help manage active construction contracts. The co-ops will assist OCC staff with routine monitoring of various unit processes, including screening, aeration basins, clarifiers, and solids processing. Co-ops may also collect and analyze data on unit processes. Other duties may include performing field inspections, odor monitoring, background research, marking up plans, and other similar, miscellaneous tasks.
Requirements
Applicants should be enrolled as undergraduates in an engineering field, preferably civil, mechanical, or environmental, or be enrolled in a water resources or construction major. Experience in Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook is desirable. The ability to perform field inspections is required. Must be able to walk over uneven terrain, up & down stairs, and into tight spaces while wearing a hard hat, safety glasses, and safety shoes. The ability to read and understand technical documents is desired. A valid driver's license and a good driving record at time of application, during the selection process, and throughout the co-op terms is required.
Supplemental Information:
This co-op position runs for TWO or THREE nonconsecutive 16-week terms. The District is looking for two students for this role. One student will begin the first co-op term in the summer of 2026, return in the spring of 2027, and finish in the fall of 2027. The second student will begin the first co-op term in the fall of 2026, return in the summer of 2027, and finish in the spring of 2028. Must remain a student throughout the duration of the terms.
This co-op position is located at the Jones Island Water Reclamation Facility located at 700 East Jones Street in Milwaukee. Due to limited public transportation options, students are advised to have access to a personal vehicle for daily commuting to the site.
