The Transitional Executive Director for Student Health / Assistant Vice Chancellor for Integrated Care (AVC/ED) provides overall strategic and operational leadership for Student Health Services (SHS), driving high-quality, cost-effective care that supports the academic mission and wellbeing of over 25,000 students. The AVC/ED manages daily operations through subordinate managers and senior directors across diverse clinical and administrative disciplines, including primary care, behavioral health, psychiatry, ancillary services, and the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). The position holds primary accountability for a $30+ million budget, ~100 FTE staff, regulatory compliance, risk management, and the overall financial, operational, and physical infrastructure of the health system.
Reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Wellbeing, this two-year executive contract appointment provides strategic leadership for implementing organizational improvements identified through a 2026 external review of UC Santa Barbara's Student Health Service and Behavioral Health System of Care planning process. The position leads the development of Student Health's strategic plan, and advances an integrated behavioral health model across Student Health Service, Counseling & Psychological Services, and campus partners, and directs complex organizational change initiatives. Through executive oversight of senior leadership, strategic planning, organizational development, and financial sustainability initiatives, the incumbent is accountable for implementing a coordinated behavioral health system that improves access, care navigation, operational effectiveness, performance outcomes, and long-term organizational sustainability.
Requirements
To attract the widest possible pool of qualified leaders, this role is being recruited via two parallel tracks: a Clinical/Physician Track (for medically licensed candidates) and an Administrative Track (for non-physician healthcare executives). Required Qualifications: Physician Track Only: Must be Board Certified,and in possession of the legal requirements for the practice of medicine in California as determined by the California Medical Board Master’s degree in Public Health, Healthcare Administration or related fields along with at least 10 years of relevant experience in a leadership or administrative role OR M.D., Ph.D., Psy.D. or other clinical training along with at least five years of relevant experience in healthcare administration in a leadership role.
