Company History

Transit in Columbus began as early as 1863, when horse-drawn streetcars operated along High Street. By 1888, Columbus became one of the nation’s early adopters of electric trolley service. In 1972, after the region’s transit assets evolved through public and private stewardship, Columbus voters created COTA to preserve and grow public transportation in the area. In the five decades since its founding, COTA has matured from a regional bus system to a nationally recognized transportation agency. Milestones include receiving APTA recognition as Outstanding Public Transportation System in both 2018 and 2020.
