Florida State Hospital was awarded a 2014 Florida Preservation Award for Meritorious work in the preservation of Florida’s Heritage.
In 2015, the Hospital received a 3 year re-accreditation certification from the Commission on Accreditation for Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). Three years is the maximum achievable length of time for accreditation..
Since 1959, Northeast Florida State Hospital (NEFSH) has provided continuous service to people whose mental health needs cannot be met in community-based programs, or whose assessed needs require a residential treatment environment. This facility is the largest provider of civil service in the State of Florida, operating 633 beds, and employs 1,007 people making it the largest single employer in Baker County.
As a 2000 Governor's Sterling Award Winner for Organizational Performance Excellence and National Accreditation by CARF, our commitment to those whom we serve will continue to focus on ensuring that they never lose hope for a quality of life that they seek and deserve.
Based on standards of care for general health concerns, Service Planning standards, and best practices in psychosocial rehabilitation, recovery at NEFSH is addressed through a person-centered approach. Following a review of significant issues presented by the community upon admission, comprehensive evaluations and assessments, clinical observations, the strengths, needs, and desires of the individual and their long term view, a service plan is developed to guide treatments during the person's stay at NEFSH. Psychosocial rehabilitation centers, referred to as Recovery Centers on the NEFSH campus, focus on therapeutic interventions designed to develop and/or enhance skills necessary for problem solving, building and maintaining social relationships, and functional life skills necessary for successful community living.
A team of psychiatrists, nurses, psychologists, counselors and paraprofessionals develops a recovery plan for the evaluation and treatment of each of our residents. We encourage Residents to take responsibility for themselves and their treatment. We believe each Resident must take an active role in his recovery.
Opened in 1976, North Florida Evaluation and Treatment Center (NFETC) is operated as an evaluation and treatment center for men with mental illnesses who are involved in the criminal justice system. These residents are either incompetent to proceed to trial or have been judged to be not guilty by reason of insanity. Our mission is to evaluate, treat and discharge in a manner which ensures proper safety, security and respect of rights. We are a maximum security treatment facility, not a jail or prison.
North Florida Evaluation and Treatment Center (NFETC) treats clients using a wide variety of treatment and rehabilitation techniques. Treatment may include medication, individual and group therapy, counseling, education, training and behavioral management, as well as other therapeutic activities including art, music, recreation and horticulture.
NFETC has a complete medical clinic for physical exams and routine medical and dental care. The facility also has a canteen stocking many items from soft drinks to radios, a shop where clients can buy clothes and greeting cards, visit a barber shop and use on-site laundry facilities.
Company History
Florida State Hospital's history dates back to 1832, having been first used as a Federal Arsenal, built by the United States Army as an arms depot during the Second Seminole Indian War.The arsenal was taken over by Confederate troops in 1861 and used as a staging area during the Civil War. It was converted in 1865 by the Freedman's Bureau and used until 1868, when it was transformed into the state's first penitentiary. In 1876, by action by the Florida State Legislature, the site became Florida State Hospital and remained the only state hospital until 1947. In 1959, Florida State Hospital had its highest census with 6,689 residents. In the following years the philosophy of deinstitutionalization led to a decrease in population during the 1970's and eventually Hospital capacity reached a low of 930 in 1998. Current capacity is 959 beds.
