Leadership Psychiatry role working with both The University of Hawaiʻi John A. Burns School of Medicine & The Queen's Health Systems | Compensation is between $457,000 and $503,000 per year
The University of Hawaiʻi John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) is seeking applications for an exceptional physician leader to serve as Chair of the Department of Psychiatry. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to concurrently serve as Chief of Behavioral Health for The Queen's Health Systems, creating a unique platform to shape the future of psychiatric education, research, clinical excellence, and behavioral health strategy across Hawaiʻi.
This integrated leadership role connects two highly influential responsibilities within the state's leading academic and healthcare institutions. The Chair provides academic vision and leadership for JABSOM's Department of Psychiatry, while the Chief of Behavioral Health partners with health system executives, faculty, and clinical leaders to advance behavioral healthcare delivery, innovation, quality, and access across The Queen's Health Systems.
Appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The position is full-time, tenure track, and annually renewable based on performance, operational needs, and funding availability.
Please note: Appointment as Chief of Behavioral Health is contingent upon appointment as Department Chair and applicable institutional approvals.
Opportunity Overview:

The successful candidate will be responsible for advancing psychiatric education and scholarship, strengthening clinical programs, developing future physician leaders, and helping define behavioral healthcare strategy for Hawaiʻi.
The Chair/Chief will serve as a visible and collaborative leader who can unite stakeholders across JABSOM, The Queen's Health Systems, affiliated medical groups, graduate medical education programs, healthcare partners, and community organizations.
Key Responsibilities:
Academic Leadership:
Provide strategic leadership for the Department of Psychiatry's education, clinical, research, and community service missions.
Advance faculty development, mentoring, recruitment, retention, and career advancement.
Oversee undergraduate, graduate, and continuing medical education initiatives.
Foster innovation in psychiatric education and competency-based training.
Support accreditation readiness and compliance with LCME and ACGME standards.
Promote scholarly activity, research growth, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Represent the department within JABSOM, the University of Hawaiʻi, and external professional organizations.
Clinical and Health System Leadership:
Lead behavioral health strategy and program development across The Queen's Health Systems.
Partner with operational and physician leaders to strengthen the quality, safety, and effectiveness of behavioral health services.
Advance integrated care models and innovative approaches to psychiatric care delivery.
Support initiatives focused on patient outcomes, behavioral health access, and population health.
Develop collaborative partnerships across healthcare systems, community organizations, and governmental agencies.
Champion efforts to address mental health disparities and improve behavioral healthcare statewide.
Faculty, Research, and Community Engagement:
Serve as a mentor and role model for faculty, trainees, and clinical leaders.
Expand research activities, including clinical, translational, outcomes, quality improvement, and population health research.
Foster collaborative programs that address the behavioral health needs of Hawaiʻi's diverse communities.
Maintain an active clinical practice appropriate to specialty expertise.
Participate in university, hospital, and professional service activities.
Minimum Qualifications:
Associate Professor:
MD, DO, or equivalent medical degree from an accredited institution.
Board Certified in Psychiatry through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
Eligible for or currently licensed to practice medicine in Hawaiʻi.
Minimum of four years of professional experience as a physician, including at least two years of clinical and/or educational leadership experience.
Experience working within multidisciplinary healthcare systems and community-based psychiatric care models.
Demonstrated excellence in teaching, mentorship, and academic contributions.
Evidence of scholarly productivity, including peer-reviewed publications, presentations, research participation, or educational innovation.
Regional or local recognition for professional achievement and leadership.
Professor (In addition to the above qualifications for associate professor):
Significant academic leadership experience consistent with appointment at the Professor rank.
Demonstrated national or international reputation as a clinician, educator, scholar, researcher, or administrator.
Strong record of peer-reviewed publication, academic achievement, and professional service.
Proven success leading complex academic, clinical, research, or healthcare organizations.
Evidence of competitive funding, research leadership, or major programmatic development.
Preferred Qualifications:
Department Chair, Division Chief, Service Line Leader, or equivalent executive leadership experience.
Experience leading psychiatry or behavioral health programs within an academic medical center.
Demonstrated success in strategic planning and organizational growth.
Expertise in faculty development and mentorship.
Experience preparing organizations for LCME or ACGME accreditation reviews.
Track record of innovative program development in education, research, clinical care, or community psychiatry.
Board certification in a psychiatry subspecialty.
Strong record of addressing mental health disparities, cultural responsiveness, and community engagement.
Experience building collaborative partnerships across healthcare systems and academic institutions.
